개복동과 언니들

아침에 해장국집에 가면 장지갑을 든 남자 한 명과 국밥을 먹고 있는 언니들을 쉽게 볼 수 있었다. 화장 안한 얼굴들은 창백했고 눈빛은 무심했다. 그녀들이 말없이 담배를 입에 물면 남자가 라이터 불을 붙여주었다. 언니들은 담배를 한두 모금 깊이 빨고는 재떨이에 비벼 껐다. 남자만이 유일하게 한 두어 마디씩 툭툭 내뱉을 뿐 식탁에는 침묵이 흘렀고, 별 식욕없는 식사를 마치면 남자가 국밥 값을 냈으며 그들은 한 차에 올라타고 갔다. 

언니들은 남자의 감시하에 숙소에 가고 남자가 정해준 시간까지 쉬고, 남자가 안내하는 목욕탕엘 가고, 남자가 정해주는 시간까지 목욕을 마쳐야 한다. 오후에 욕탕에 가면 그 언니들을 자주 보았는데 참 후했다. 언니들은 '세신사'(목욕 서비스를 해주는 사람)에게 팁도 넉넉히 주고 마실 것도 사줬다. 가끔 소심해 보이는 여자들이 수군덕 거리거나 의자를 들고 슬슬 언니들곁에서 멀어져 갔지만 그들은 개의치 않았다.  물론 기분이 안좋아 정숙한척하는 여자들을 차갑게 쏘아 보고  쫄게 만드는 날들도 있었으나 그들은 대체로 조용했다. 이젠 진하게 화장을 하고 향수를 뿌리고 진빨강이나 진보라 드레스를 입고 빨강 조명이 켜진 쇼윈도 속에 앉게 될 시간. 능숙한 고객이 들어와 능숙하게 언니의 몸을 사용하고 가기도 하지만 세상 변태 새끼가 들어와 그녀에게 지옥 같은 시간을 안겨주기도 했을 거고, 역겨운 지식인 놈이 와서 자기가 해주겠노라고 설쳐대기도 했을 것이다. 아주 가끔은 그녀들이 윈도우 밖에서 쭈볏거리며 서성대는 애송이를 유혹해서 서비스를 하기도 했을 것이다.  

가족들은 언니들이 벌어온 돈은 요구하면서도 그녀들 자체는 숨겨야 할 더럽고 창피한 존재로 여겼다. 가난때문에 자발적으로 뛰어든 언니도 있었을 거고, 순간 걸음을 잘 못 내디뎠거나 인신매매단에 끌려와 영영 돌아 가지 못한 언니들도 있었을 것이다. 언니들은 포주와 장지갑 남자와 가족의 생계와 비싼 화장품이나 화려한 속옷 같은 사업 장비들이 만들어낸 빚의 수렁에서 영육을 뜯겨가며 노동을 했겠지. 포주들이 안에선 열수 없는 특수 잠금장치를한 방안에 일과를 마친 언니들을 가둬놓고 재운다고 들었다. 2002년, 그 숙소 중 하나에서 화재가 발생했으며 잠을 자던15명의 언니들 중 14명이 타죽었다. 그것이 바로 군산 개복동 화재 사건이다. 

군산의 성매매가 활발해진 것은 일제 강점기 때, 군산 항구를 이용해 쌀 수탈하던 일본 관리들과 지역 유지들이 벌인 유곽 사업이 그 시초라고 한다. 이후 공창이 생겼다가 폐지되고, 아메리카 타운이 조성되고, 지역 경제 활성화란 명목으로 성매매 사업 특구로 지정되었다. 어찌 보면 국가와 포주들과 그들의 뒤를 봐준 경찰들 간 유착으로 성매매가 성행하고 여자들의 인권이 유린되어 온 것이다. 내가 자세한 내용은 지식이 미천하여 쓸 수 없다.

개복동 길을 걷다가 아기자기하게 들어선 가게들을 보며 잠시 과거속으로 들어가 보았다. 

 

When I went to Haejanggukjip in the morning, I could easily see a man with a long wallet and a few women eating soup. Faces without makeup were pale and eyes were indifferent. They silently put a cigarette in their mouth, and the man lit a lighter. The women took a deep sip or two and rubbed them out on the ashtray. Silence fell on the table with only a man spitting out a word or two, and after a meal with no appetite, the man paid for the soup, and they got into the car and left.

The women had to go to the dormitory under the supervision of a man, rested until the time set by the man, went to the bathroom guided by the man, and finished bathing by the time set by the man. When I went to a public bath in the afternoon, I often saw them, and they were very generous. They also gave generous tips to the 'Sesinsa' (a person who provides bath services) and bought them something to drink. Occasionally, timid looking women would squint at them and talk between themselves or pick up a chair and slowly move away from them, but they didn't care. There were days when they felt bad and made cold shots, terrifying women who pretended to be modest, but they were mostly quiet. Around at 7 in the evening they put on a lot of makeup, sprayed perfume, put on a deep red or Jinjinra dress, and sat in the red-lit show window. A savvy customer would come in and use a woman's body skillfully and go away, a kinky bastard of the world would come in and give her a hellish time, and a disgusting intellectual would come and say he would serve her. Very occasionally, they may have seduced and served the young puppies who were squatting outside the window.

Their families demanded the money the woman had earned, but  considered them too dirty and shameful to be accepted as family. There must have been some women who jumped in prostitution voluntarily because of poverty, and there must have been women who took a wrong step for a moment or were dragged into trafficking groups and never returned. The women must have worked by tearing their souls and bodies out of the abyss of debt created by pimps and long wallet men and their families, as well as business equipment such as expensive cosmetics and fancy underwear. I heard that pimps put the women after work in a room with a special lock that cannot be opened from inside and put them to sleep there. In 2002, a fire broke out in one of the hostels, killing 14 of the 15 women sleeping. That is the fire incident in Gaebok-dong, Gunsan.

It is said that the prostitution in Gunsan became active during the Japanese colonial period, when Japanese officials and local officials who used the port of Gunsan were used to plunder rice and ran a brothel business. After that, a vacancy was created and then abolished, and America Town was established, and it was designated as a special prostitution business zone in the name of revitalizing the local economy. In a way, the relationship between the state, the pimps, and the police who looked after them has led to prostitution and violation of women's human rights. I can't write more details because I'm not very knowledgeable.

As I was walking down Gaebok-dong, I looked into the past while looking at the cute little shops.
